This week’s article in Nature, Lithium deficiency and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, highlights groundbreaking findings on lithium’s potential to protect brain health—research that deserves recognition and applause. As one of the first elements formed after the Big Bang, lithium has been part of the human story from the very beginning. For decades, my own research has explored the remarkable role of low-dose lithium in supporting cognitive function and mental health, not only in Alzheimer’s disease but across a range of psychiatric conditions.
Low-dose lithium is not a“new” idea—but the growing body of evidence is giving it new life. From protecting against neurodegeneration to supporting mood stability, recovery from psychiatric medications, and overall brain resilience, this simple mineral continues to prove itself as one of nature’s most powerful allies for mental wellness.
I applaud these researchers for adding to this vital conversation, and I hope these findings will inspire clinicians, patients, and policymakers alike to reconsider lithium’s role in protecting and restoring brain health.
